The pace is relaxed and the quantity is choose-your-own. We are reading as often as as not, and authors can read for any submission window they didn’t submit to themselves.
A MISSION FROM BEYOND THE STARS…
Born out of a reverence for the bizarre science fiction magazines of the pulp era, Planet Scumm curates and illustrates original short stories by international authors. Our magazine is a war on the monoculture. We are fiercely independent, terrifyingly pro-author, and perpetually running for Comptroller of Earth (write in both “Planet Scumm” and “Comptroller of Earth” on your local ballot).
Our magazine was inspired by science fiction magazines such as Asimov’s Science Fiction and Weird Tales. And while we genuinely love the bold, kitschy, experimental early days of those publications, we also recognize that the genre has come a long way since then. The authors we hold in the highest esteem include Kurt Vonnegut, Octavia E. Butler, Ursula K. Leguin, Liu Cixin, and Philip K. Dick.
Any given issue of Planet Scumm includes some thrills, some chills, and some pills. We try to balance some shamelessly fun pulp to quicken the pulse with philosophical stories that reallllllly make you think.
